A New Addition

We have a new addition to the Scurlock family....And NO I do not mean THAT kind of new addition.

A little over a month ago, Josh and I brought home a little guy that we think is pretty fabulous.

He cost us a pretty penny, especially considering  that he is 14 years old.

But we are quickly realizing that the amount of joy he brings into this family was worth the cost.

He has a dingy white body and soot black feet and while he may not look super cute from the outside, it's really the inside that counts.

Luckily, we don't have to feed him much at all.  Which is good because we don't have much extra money.

He has to be coaxed into going up big hills.  And sometimes we wonder if he will really make it.

And he has some funny little quirks that we are quickly growing accustomed to.

But so far, he has treated us pretty well.  We named him Toby...

As in Toby Toyota.

Meet our 1997 Toyota Corolla Toby.  I'm not kidding when I say that he has some funny quirks.  You have to hold the door handle up when you close the door or it will unlock itself.  And I really do wonder if it will make it up some of the hills on this island on a regular basis.  He cost us $4,200, which if you are thinking is crazy for a 14 year old car, well, that's just how it works around here. Supposedly he won't depriciate much in value over the next year.  We don't have to fill up our gas tank but once a month since we are really only driving it within a 5 or 6 mile radius.  And it does make our lives SO much easier.

I am so happy to have Toby around.  Especially when grocery shopping. :)

  1. Oh, Stephanie! Congratulations! Our quality of life improved so much when we got a (free) car here in Durham. Unfortunately, it just failed its MOT miserably, so we're on the hunt for a new one before the end of the month. Here's to going "big shopping" without making the hubby your "trolley dolly."

  2. Cute car! You'll feel like you are riding in luxury when you return to the States and are reunited with your white 2005 Toyota Corolla!

I think you should change Toby's name to "Stinker," partially because of his idiosyncrasies, partially because of his "name tag." "P U," get it?

    Love you,
    Mom

  4. Having a car in Grenada was so wonderful. Even though Andy never let me drive his because there was a good chance I wouldn't make it home, and his car was a piece of crap. He had a 1997 orange Suzuki something. The ragtop didn't fit. The fuses were patched with tin foil. It had the wrong battery for the car (too tall), so until Andy got a new one from Ace (which was very expensive), the battery kept making connections with the hood of the car, and we had to carry a rasp with us to remove the battery acid from the terminals in order to start the car each time - until someone stole our rasp, forcing us to get a new battery. It was an electrical nightmare. The spot for the radio was just a hole. The back gate randomly fell open. And I don't think there's such a thing as a new tire on the island. They just keep patching and patching... Word of advice - wash your engine before you sell it because you have to pass emissions or something like emissions - Andy's car failed emissions the first time he went and then passed after he washed the engine. Andy kept the title documents in the dash and they were stolen, so you might want to avoid keeping them there. Your car looks great compared to what we cruised around in! Good luck with it!
