Sunset on Grand Anse Beach

On Saturday, Josh and I spent most of the day lounging.  He actually wanted to go to the beach, but I was in desperate need of nap.  It is VERY unlike me to turn down a trip to the beach, but I had gotten up early to teach a gymnastics class and then worked at the SO kids Easter party all while he continued to sleep. :) 

By about 5pm, I was ready to do something.  So we grabbed a towel and headed over to Grand Anse Beach to watch the sunset together.  Since the sun isn't setting until about 6:30pm these days, we had a bit of time and walked down the beach to Garfield's to enjoy a pina colada...or two.

I need to make sure we see a few more of these before we leave Grenada.  Only one month left on this beautiful island.

The Beginning of the End...

...of Basic Sciences.

Josh began his last term of Basic Sciences this week.  It's absolutely crazy to me that in four short months, he'll be done with year two of medical school and we'll be off to the states for clinical rotations.

We spent the weekend before classes began together.  Just the way I like it.  We went up to the lookout point at the end of Lance Aux Epines to watch the sunset together with Julie and Kevin.  It did not disappoint.

So here's to 5th Term, may Josh do well in his last classes ever, and may we soak up every ounce of Grenada that we can.

Twenty

Remember in my last post I said I had another birthday to attend?  Well on Wednesday night we celebrated my good friend Sara's 20th birthday.  She's no longer a teenager anymore!  I sometimes can't believe she was married and living in a foreign country at the young age of 18.  But I am jealous that at such a young age she has been all over the world and experienced so many things that I hadn't when I was her age.

Sara had told us during the summer (seems weird to call any season "summer" since they all seem the same here) that she wanted a bonfire at the beach for her 20th birthday.  So we planned a bonfire on Magazine Beach complete with hot dogs, soda, lots of cake, and best of all mosquitos!  I think all who attended where pretty eaten up by the end of the night.  It's really too bad mosquitos don't drink fat instead of blood.  I'd be getting SUPER skinny!

 I'm sorry to say Grandma Scurlock, but Joshua was yet again not in attendance. Too much studying to do to spare a couple of hours. (She wonders why Josh is never in the pictures-TIG).

Anyway, we had a little trouble starting the bonfire, but luckily Sarah G. came to the rescue and showed off her Girlscout skills in fire making.  So we roasted some hotdogs and ate them watching the sun go down.

At this time of year, Magazine Beach might be one of the best spots to watch the sun go down.  It continues to amaze me how beautiful the sunsets are here and how different they all are.  They are never exactly the same.  Maybe one of these days I will get up early enough to watch the sun rise.  I'm sure that's beautiful too.

I hope that Sara enjoyed her birthday party.  I am so thankful to call her a friend and loved being able to celebrate her special day with her. Welcome to the twenties Sara!

Compromises

Josh finished his midterms this week for both Pathology and Microbiology.  Fourth term is every bit as challenging as we heard it would be, so it was nice for Josh to have a bit of a break from studying.  Of course, our individual ideas of weekends spent "together" are very different.  It goes something like this...

Steph's idea of a weekend off of studying is going on adventures.  Maybe a hash, or a hike to a waterfall.  A day spent snorkeling on Magazine Beach or sunning on Grand Anse.  Trying out a new restaurant and watching a sunset on the sand.

While Josh's idea of a weekend off is slightly more relaxing.  It includes lounging on the couch watching football, LOTS of football.  Maybe watching a movie in bed. Eating pancakes and cookies, both of which I would be in charge of making.  And staying in our PJ's ALL DAY LONG.

Do you see a bit of a difference here?

So this weekend we compromised.

On Saturday morning, while Josh slept in late, I headed to Grand Anse for beach day with Bel Air Children's Home.  This home actually has really young babies. And I love to go and spend the morning cuddling and playing with them.

When I got home, Josh and I lounged.  We both took long naps, watched a movie in bed, and part of a football game.  And by about 4pm, I was able to convince him to head to Grand Anse Beach to watch the sunset.  We skipped rocks in the ocean, I added to my ever growing sea glass collection,  and we waited for the sky to turn a bright shade of orange as the sun set.



The sand was sparkling.



It was stunning.  As it almost always is here.

The colors in the sky were just beautiful, like God took a paint brush and painted it Himself.  I guess maybe He did.

Saturday was a perfect day, a perfect compromise.

This morning, we headed to church on campus with CSA (Christian Student Association), came home and had lunch, and then spent a couple hours on the beach throwing the frisbee.  Tonight we are heading to dinner with a few of our Newcastle friends.  Tomorrow Josh is back to school and will be hitting the books hard in preparation for his next set of tests in 6 weeks.  If I haven't already mentioned, 4th term is no joke. 

I wish weekends like this could happen more often, but I guess it makes me treasure them even more because they don't, even if I do have to compromise every once in awhile.

First Visitors on the Rock

As I mentioned in my previous post, we had some visitors last week! Josh's oldest sister Kristin and her boyfriend Brandon traveled from California to spend a week with us in Grenada.  I had such a great time with them.  Josh was pretty busy studying all week, but that didn't keep the three of us from having lots of fun.  They arrived late Tuesday night.  So Wednesday morning, after they slept in a little, we headed to Grand Anse Beach.  We spent the afternoon soaking up the sun and then headed to Umbrellas for a late afternoon lunch of burgers and fries.

Later that evening, we went over to the school to watch Josh play in an intramural basketball game. His team won! Yay!  Although Kristin definitely takes after her Mom when watching Josh play sports.  Brandon and I had to keep telling her to be quiet! :)
 

Toon Squad

Thursdays are pool days at the University Club for all the SO's.  So I took our visitors to the pool for the day.  Brandon and Kristin kayaked around the bay and we all enjoyed the pool.

 I think Brandon was really in need of a vacation...

Relaxation at its finest!

We picked Josh up from school around 5pm, but he still needed to get some good study time in.  His first set of midterms are quickly approaching.  So the three of us took a walk up Lance Aux Epines Road to the lookout point to watch the sunset.

There are SO many beautiful flowers here in Grenada.  I tried to make a point of taking pictures of the ones along our walk.

And of course Kristin and I needed to pose by some of them.

Grenada really is such a beautiful place.

Once we finally made it to the lookout point, the sunset didn't disappoint.

It was gorgeous...as usual.  I just wish Josh could have enjoyed it with us.

The first two days were so much fun! But keep checking back for more fun adventures with our visitors!
