A "Wii"lly Fun Night

Last Saturday, the SO's participated in the Wii Tournament at SGU.  It was a video game competition raising money for Mt. Gay Psychiatric Hospital in Grenada, the famine in Somalia, and the Urban Humanitarian Project in New York.

I know what you're thinking...me?  Videogames?  We didn't even have Nintendo in my house growing up, a sin I know.  But don't worry, I didn't play.  I just supported.  In fact if there had been a spirit award given out, I'm 100% positive the SO team would have won it.  We even did the wave during Wii baseball.  I'm not kidding.

Lots of clubs from SGU participated in the competition.  There were also drinks being sold and a raffle.  It was $30EC for an arms length of tickets and $60.00EC for a bodys length.  CLEARLY tall people had a major advantage!  That being said, I didn't win. Shocker.

The chancellor at SGU agreed to match (up to $50,000EC) the money that was raised in the tournament.  I'm not sure what the final count was this term, but last term they raised $80,000EC and I'm pretty sure more was raised this term!  It was a fun night with friends and I look forward to next terms Wii Tournament.  I'm gonna ask them about a spirit award in the future!

I'm In Love

I know that I post about the kids at Limes a whole lot, but I really am in love with these children.  Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I look forward to 3:00pm because that means it's Limes time.  I know it's hot.  And yes, sometimes they are wild and crazy and don't behave.  Occasionally, we have to break up fights and take snack away from kids.  But there has not been one day where I've gone to Limes and not ended up with a smile on my face. They make me laugh, they make me cry, and sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out, but I can't imagine spending my afternoons any other way.

These kids just want love and at Limes there is no shortage in supply.  Sitting in laps, hugs, and snuggles are given by the bucketloads.  I know as volunteers, we are supposed to be enriching the lives of these children.  Many of these kids don't have electricity at home, the snack at Limes might be the only food they get that day, they have clothes that are too small or too big and filled with holes, and are considered lucky if they come with shoes on.  But in my honest opinion, these children are enriching the volunteers lives even more so than we are enriching theirs.

"Anyway"

Today at CSA (Christian Student Association), this poem was read.  It was displayed in Mother Teresa's children's home in Calcutta and both Josh and I found it extremely touching and so so true.

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;

Bakersfield Pride

As I was shopping in my local IGA grocery store this week, I spotted something that looked extremely familiar in the produce section.  I snatched it up and sure enough...

Bakersfield, California Baby!  All the way in the middle of the ocean on the island of Grenada.

I am sure there were people at IGA wondering why I had a ridiculously large grin on my face while looking at baby carrots.  TIG.  It's the little things in life. :)

A Day in My Medical Student's Life

Since it is pretty obvious on our blog what I spend most of MY days doing, I think it's only fair that I do a post about how Josh spends his time here in Grenada.  Afterall, this is "The SCURLOCK Scene" and not "The STEPHANIE Scene."  Although, I have to say, my life is MUCH more exciting.

7:00am:  The alarm goes off and Josh is up and getting ready for school.  This usually includes a bowl of cereal and two cups of coffee and ESPN's Mike and Mike in the Morning.

7:15:  I roll out of bed to make Josh's lunch (Turkey or Tuna sandwhich, chips, apple, drink, and cookies).

7:45:  Josh is driven to school by me!  And sometimes we pick up friends along the way.

8:00-10:00:  Microbiology lectures.

10:00-12:00:  Pathology lectures. (AKA: the class from H-E-Double Hockey Sticks).

12:00-1:00:  Josh gets to eat the lunch I packed for him.  Sometimes complete with a cute note from yours truly (I'm such an amazing wife).

1:00-5:00:  Either Pathology Lab Group or CPD (some kind of clinical skills class).
 
5:00-5:15:  Josh either takes the SGU bus home or an attractive, blonde, California girl with a great tan picks him up in her cute white Toyota Corolla named Toby.  :)

5:15-7:00:  Josh holes up in his Man Cave and studies while the attractive blonde prepares dinner.

7:00-8:00:  He finally takes a much needed break to spend some quality time with me and eats his fabulously tasty dinner and raves about what a great cook I have become.

8:00-10:30 or 11:00ish:  Back to the Man Cave for more studying.

11:00-11:45ish:  Finally able to get ready for bed and spend 30 minutes or so watching a movie in bed with me (it takes us like a week to get through one movie).

11:45pm:  Lights out.

Sounds like a really exciting life right?  And it only gets worse when midterms or finals are approaching.  It's no wonder he's never able to do any of the fun stuff that I am up to.  But he doesn't typically complain.  Medical School is a lot of work, but he IS enjoying it, for the most part.  He is learning new stuff all the time and every day he feels like he is getting closer to becoming a doctor.  I am proud of all the hard work he puts into school.  I sometimes don't know if I could do what he is doing, but I guess that's why he is the one in school.  The next set of tests are in three weeks, so say a prayer for Josh that all is hard work will pay off and he will do well on them.  No one ever said medical school would be easy! 
 

Mt. Carmel Falls

On Friday, the SO's took a trip to Mount Carmel Falls.  It is about a 45 minute ride from SGU but we didn't notice the time because we were having so much fun chatting!  We arrived at Mt. Carmel ready to hike.

The hike to the first fall was only about 20 minutes long, but we were plenty hot by the time we got there and ready for a dip in the cool water. 

The first fall is pretty tall, with a large pool underneath that is perfect for swimming in.

After swimming for a bit, we headed to the next fall, which is actually more of a rock slide.  This one was my favorite because you could slide all the way down it.

Climbing up to this was a bit of a challenge because it was SUPER slippery and there were bees everywhere.  But I made it up there and felt very accomplished!

It was SOOOO much fun!  I hope that Josh and I can go back to Mt. Carmel Falls soon.  I know that Josh would have such a good time sliding on the rock slide.  Poor guy, he has yet to see a waterfall in Grenada. 

This week at Limes...

We drew with chalk.

And made a complete mess.

Read some books.

Played Pin The Tail On The Donkey.

And ate some cake to celebrate all the September birthdays!

Come out to the Limes field on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week to join in on the all the fun we are having!  We love having all the volunteers we can get, and the kids will just adore you.  But not nearly as much as you will adore them!
